Basta : Enough
Los Angeles, California. In 2016, the leaders of the janitors labor union SEIU discovered that the vast majority of their members had either witnessed or experienced sexual harassment in the workplace. The numbers were shocking: at the time, about 50% of their 5,000 night janitors had been sexually harassed or assaulted at work, and another 20% had witnessed it. Since then, the union started taking protective measures to fight sexual harassment in the workplace with the help of powerful female janitors who decided to break their silence and share their story. These women demanded public attention to this devastating reality within the janitorial business. By organizing and marching in Sacramento, holding banners reading “Ya Basta!” meaning “Enough is Enough.” The documentary follows a selection of these women warriors as they continue to work tirelessly to shift the abuse of power within the janitorial workplace through solidifying legal protections and teaching strength through peer empowerment. Co-Directed and Produced by Cecilia Albertini.
